Wines of the Week

Posted by peter | April 1st, 2010

(by peter) Two wines this week, both of which I name-check on Saturday Kitchen but, for various reasons outlined in the show, I don’t end up choosing. So I wanted to headline them here because I think they deserve more than just a supporting role. First up is Craggy Range’s outstanding Te Kahu Cabernet Sauvignon Merlot 2005, Gimblett Gravels, 14% (£12.99, M&S). We didn’t try this one when we visited the winery, perhaps because it’s a label made exclusively for M&S, but

Our wine of the week

(by peter) Wine of the Week: Penfolds Koonunga Hill Autumn Riesling 2008 This rakish white really impressed when we opened it, along with a few other samples, in a food-matching frenzy inspired by Susie’s Saturday Kitchen dishes for this weekend. As it happened, it didn’t quite go with the dish that we had in mind – Nick Nairn’s gorgeous monkfish with curried lentils. This is yet another example of a

Montana South Island Pinot Noir 2008, 13.5% £6.99 down from £8.99, Waitrose (until 16th Feb 2010) The thing about Pinot Noir is it usually comes from just one spot. It’s a winemaker thing. Pinot means place. And that’s it. The trouble with this is as follows. In certain – actually, probably the majority of sites, where the vines are young or the winemakers haven’t quite worked out the intricacies of handling the particularly pernickety Pinot, this can make for wines that just lack

Wine of the Week

(by susie) Chablis 1er Cru Montée de Tonnerre 2008, Domaine Moreau-Naudet Pete and I covered half a dozen of the recent round of Burgundy 08 en primeur tastings and, although there appear to be good and bad wines of both colours, in our opinion it is a wonderful vintage for Chablis.  If you’d like to invest in a case to lay down for a year or two then this is our top tip.  It shows beautiful leesy, mineral aromas, fabulous freshness, and it is enhanced by a very subtle hint of old

(by peter) Susie and I will be posting our bargain buys regularly on the site – so keep your eyes peeled. So without further ado, here’s our top bargain of the moment: Vinalta Malbec 2008 (M&S, £3.99 down from £5.49, until 1st Nov 2009) I had this juicy, peppery little number in mind as a contender to pair with Jason Atherton’s hanger steak on last week’s
